Capture one pro 12 vs luminar 3 free
Getting images into Luminar is simple — just drag and drop. Aside from all the great features, the main benefit of Luminar over Lightroom and all the other image editors available in is its simplicity.
For those familiar with Lightroom, the editing panels in Luminar look almost identical — all the main adjustments for RAW files are there, including more advanced features like Curves and LUT Mapping. Performance depends heavily on the size of the original file, and your computer hardware.
Finally, there were complaints about crashes and performance issues with the initial release, but thankfully, with the v4. While the aforementioned Luminar is, without doubt, a fantastic alternative to Lightroom, it does fall short of being a complete replacement, lacking certain file management features that professional photographers rely on. Thankfully, it works well in conjunction with Lightroom as a plugin , but what about those of us who want something to replace Lr completely?
The answer lies in a popular product by Exposure Software review , now in its 6th iteration. Exposure X6 is an advanced image editing app that rivals Lightroom Classic, with powerful features, intuitive controls and ease of use, all for one affordable fee i.
As a fully-featured RAW image editing software, Exposure X6 offers all the photo manipulation and file-management tools for advanced photographers, while still being simple enough for beginners to start using right away. It can also be used as a plugin for Lightroom , but we recommend ditching Adobe completely in favour of X6, to save on those monthly fees.
Those transitioning from Lr will find the Exposure workspace very similar, with an additional benefit — panels and editing tools can be completely customized to suit your needs.
Photo management in Exposure is impressively fast. Incidentally, migrating images from an existing Lightroom catalogue is simple, with all existing edits, stars, flags, keywords and other metadata included with the files.
Filtering in Exposure is a breeze, with the ability to quickly find your images based on all the usual variables. One handy feature is the ability to collaborate on image editing, via a cloud-based service such as Dropbox. This allows you to access your edits on multiple computers, or give access to your team if you shoot as part of a studio. The ability to customise your tools and workspace is a great feature.
Another useful feature is the 3D Colour Masking tool, which allows you to create and control a mask based on hue, saturation and vibrance. Performance-wise, Exposure is fast to import and export images, and suffers from very little lag while editing, even on heavy RAW files.
Best of all, perhaps, is its price. All in all, Exposure is an impressive piece of software that should fulfil all your needs as a photographer seeking a way to interact with your images, and produce stunning results.
ON1 Photo RAW is another of our favorite alternatives, and the version brings in a number of new features see review. Like Luminar, it combines an image organizer, Raw processor, layered editor, and effects app all in one.
The develop module is structured much like Lightroom, and as mentioned before will seem a bit more complex to those new to photo editing. That being said, ON1 has all the photo adjustments you would expect from a Lightroom replacement, including excellent AI auto options for tone. Used well, it can save quite a bit of time when making multiple selections.
These work much the same as Photoshop and inPixio , with masks, blend modes, and an easy way to merge layers. Not everyone uses these features, but if you do and want an all-in-one editor, ON1 has an edge up on the competition here. In terms of image editing, Photopea offers adjustments for exposure, brightness, contrast, and color, filters and special effects, support for layers and masks, selection tools, geometric transformations, and lens correction.
Like Photoshop, however, Photopea has few presets and styles and requires time and precision to create your own style. With a long history in image and video management, today ACDSee also develops a complete photo editing solution called Photo Studio Ultimate. This editor provides not only a helpful digital asset management tool, batch processing, and sharing functionalities but also powerful RAW and HDR editing, facial recognition, and smart tools for fine-tuning every aspect of an image.
Among the best features of ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate are non-destructive editing, exquisite functionality for working with layers blending modes, layer effects, auto-align, rulers and guidelines, etc. You can use it to adjust color, contrast, brightness, and details, apply filters and special effects, overlay textures and images with different exposures, remove noise and sharpen images, work with layers and masks to retouch images or create complex compositions, view histograms, and export images in different formats.
Polarr Photo Editor is fun and easy to use. It offers the main functionalities a beginner may need to retouch and enhance images. Photolemur is one of the best photo editing software choices for beginners and the general public. This editor provides smart, automatic tools that enhance images fast and deliver natural-looking results.
Photolemur uses AI-based algorithms to recognize faces and objects and apply custom adjustments for each part of an image. The best features of Photolemur are skin and face retouching, sky enhancement, and exposure compensation. It supports RAW files and can work with multiple images at the same time. Photolemur also comes with many styles to personalize your images. It has an interface very similar to the one in Photoshop and provides the same functionalities as the famous image editor.
With GIMP, you can even develop your own custom functionality and be part of the large community. GIMP provides an extensive set of tools for image retouching and manipulation, graphic design, and creating artwork. The most useful of these are support for layers, precise selection tools, drawing and painting tools, adjustments for exposure, contrast, color, and details, and a wide variety of filters.
Facetune is a photo editing mobile application designed to enhance selfies. This app allows you to whiten teeth, remove wrinkles and blemishes, chisel jawlines, add a smile to a face, brighten eyes and remove red-eye, smooth skin, and reshape faces.
It also provides artistic effects, filters, and makeup brushes. The results are natural-looking and ready for social media. There are a wide variety of photo editors that deserve to be known. Not all of them are free, but vendors offer free trial versions to help you decide which one is the best photo editing software for you.
Consider your skill level, professional requirements, budget, and technical resources. Keep in mind that a complete photo editor can replace several products, such as a RAW converter and an image organizer. If you work in a photo studio, tethered shooting can save you time and energy. But everything comes with a price, and sometimes several free editors are able to do the job of an expensive and sophisticated editor.

Don’t miss this! Having been a long time user of Lightroom, Usnea investigates the pros and cons of making the switch to Capture One Pro. We live in a world where Adobe Lightroom is the industry standard for serious photographers, and many of us have used it for years.
Now that Adobe products are available only by subscription, many photographers are looking for an alternative. OnOne and Luminar are both looking for their share of the market, but Capture One Pro has long been the best professional Lightroom alternative , and many photographers are now turning to it. My long background in Lightroom and Photoshop make me a bit of a hard sell.
Capture One is a professional-grade photo editing software designed for pros and serious enthusiasts. It was first created with tethered image capturing in mind, but quickly branched out to a more full-fledged image processing program. Now it offers exceptional RAW image file processing, image cataloging, layers, local adjustments, keystone adjustments, as well as just about all the features one would expect out of a pro image editing app.
The paid versions all have a free day trial period, and I highly recommend you use this to have a play around. There are several versions of Capture One, each with various other options to choose from, which can make the initial download process rather confusing.

Here the film strip is on the bottom, similar to a Lightroom layout. While brand-specific photo editing applications can work great, they don’t have the versatility or popularity of options from third-party vendors. If you want to purchase a photo editing application, which one is best? There are so many photo editing apps available out there. It can be daunting to determine what will work best for you, your skill level, budget and the results you hope to achieve.
That’s where we come in. We will break down the best available options and tell you a bit about each one, including its unique selling points and its strengths and weaknesses.
We’ll also say what each app costs and whether there’s a free trial available. Even though we haven’t reviewed the latest versions of each app on this list, we have used recent versions of each of them. Further, the list isn’t a ranking, so just because an app is near the top or bottom doesn’t mean it’s better or worse.
We’re going to kick things off with Adobe, a company that’s had a monolithic presence in the photo editing space for decades. The first version of Adobe Photoshop came out in February , so it’s safe to say that Adobe has a lot of experience making photo editing software. Over the plus years that Adobe has been working on photo editing software, Photoshop has developed many key technologies and earned a reputation as one of the most versatile and capable image editing apps.
There’s nothing out there quite as powerful as Adobe Photoshop, although, as we’ll see, other apps can still do a lot and, for many photographers, often offer more than enough. However, while Photoshop is great for editing images, Adobe Lightroom Classic is nearly as powerful while delivering excellent media organizational tools. Where Photoshop is purely an image editor, Lightroom is an all-in-one app. It allows you to import, organize and edit your photos.
Many photographers swear by just Adobe Lightroom for all their photo editing and organizational needs. Recent updates have only made Lightroom more powerful, with incredible new masking tools to make selective editing easier and more useful. Even sophisticated tools like masks are quite easy to use within Adobe Lightroom’s relatively straightforward user interface.
Many key editing tasks, like exposure, color and contrast adjustments are performed using simple sliders. There’s also a cloud-based, simpler version of Lightroom that’s simply called ‘Lightroom. Adobe’s other Lightroom works well on desktops, smartphones and tablets but lacks some of the more powerful editing features of Lightroom Classic. Lightroom Classic is the go-to choice for organizing and editing photos for most enthusiasts and nearly all pros.
While extremely popular and very good, Adobe’s software isn’t perfect. The issue that receives the most attention is that Adobe’s software is subscription only. When software is as ubiquitous as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, there are bound to be vocal detractors.
With great popularity comes additional scrutiny. However, there are good reasons why many photographers use Adobe software. It’s powerful software that receives regular updates, supports basically all cameras and lenses, and is relatively easy to use.
The software’s ubiquity also means countless tutorials and guides are available to help photographers learn how to use Lightroom and Photoshop to perform nearly any photo editing task. Free trial: Yes, 7 days and requires billing information. Available on: macOS and Windows. Just because Adobe Lightroom is the most popular organizational and editing app doesn’t mean that it’s the best at everything.
If you’re a more advanced photographer looking to get the most out of your RAW image files and edit color with even better fidelity, then Capture One 22 is well worth checking out. Capture One 22 is a bit more sophisticated and thus a bit harder to learn than Adobe Lightroom. That said, Capture One has stepped up its educational content over the last few years, and there are many fantastic tutorials available directly through the app to help new users learn all about the software and its capabilities.
It’s also a popular choice for many pros, so there are educational resources aplenty. Speaking of capabilities, Capture One 22 introduces new HDR and panoramic merge features, two editing tools that have long been lacking in the editor. Capture One also includes many ways for those used to the Lightroom ‘look’ to feel right at home in Capture One, including specific workspace settings to recreate the typical Lightroom user interface within Capture One.
